Google Play Mobile Device Onboarding

Making the first experience with a new device faster and easier

Setting up a new mobile device should feel exciting. Instead, the process can leave users confused, apprehensive or overwhelmed before they begin using it.

At Google Play, I led the UX vision for streamlining mobile device onboarding, reducing setup friction and the time customers spent completing the process in retail environments.

At a glance

Role: UX Design Lead
Organization: Google Play, Distribution
Focus: Device setup, usability and ecosystem entry
Outcome: A faster, more intuitive onboarding experience

The Problem

Users wanted their new devices to feel familiar quickly. They needed confidence that the apps and services they relied on would be available, along with clear guidance through an unfamiliar setup process.

Too much complexity at this stage increased cognitive load, extended in-store setup time and weakened an important first impression of the Android ecosystem.

The Strategic Opportunity

We could transform onboarding from a series of system decisions into a more guided transition.

The experience needed to help users understand what was happening, make essential choices and begin using their new device with less effort.

My Role

As UX Design Lead, I directed the experience strategy and aligned product, engineering, research and Android partners around a simpler onboarding journey.

Research and customer feedback helped us identify where users felt uncertain, what they wanted to preserve from their previous devices and where the process could be streamlined.

The Experience

We focused the journey on the decisions that mattered most, clarified each step and reduced unnecessary complexity.

The redesigned experience gave users a clearer sense of progress and a more direct path from activating a device to using it.

The new onboarding experience reduced friction and shortened the time customers spent setting up devices in retail stores.

It created a faster, more cohesive entry into the Android ecosystem and a stronger first experience with Google Play.

The Outcome

What this work demonstrates

Mobile Device Onboarding shows how I translate research, technical complexity and cross-functional requirements into an experience that feels simple to the customer.
